12 WEEK FINE WOODWORKING COURSES

The Sturt School for Wood has commenced intensive twelve week courses in 2008. The course dates: March 3rd - May 23rd, June 30th - September 19th and September 29th - December 19th. The third course still has one position available.
 
Courses have a maximum of six students. Tuition is tailored to suit individual needs and levels of competency. A minimum age of 18 by the start of the year is required for these courses. Students are required to provide their own hand tools from a supplied list.

Each course commences with a series of set projects to introduce students to essential techniques, using both hand tools and machinery. The second part of the course involves the design and construction of a cabinet including a drawer. The final project incorporates bending and veneering.

The course objective is to provide intensive instruction for those wishing to acquire or develop a high level of competence in the skills of fine woodworking within a twelve week period.  The course is to be seen as an alternative, rather than an introduction to the 41 week Certificate IV course.
Over the 12 weeks of the course, students will have the opportunity to cover the following areas:

  • Design – drafting; developing designs through models, mock-ups and prototypes
  • Timber – wood characteristics; buying timber; selecting wood appropriate to the design
  • Joinery – hand cut and machine cut joints including dovetail, mortise and tenon, mitre and finger joints
  • Hand skills – sharpening, use and tuning of chisels, hand planes, saws and scrapers; hand cut joinery
  • Machine techniques – use of primary static woodworking machinery and portable power tools
  • Bending techniques – laminating, steam bending, coopering
  • Veneering – use of both sliced and sawn veneers
  • Finishing – preparing wood with cutting tools, scrapers and abrasives; application of various finishes

Course acceptance is on completion of an enrolment form and payment of the deposit.
