STURT JEWELLERY AND METALCRAFT

RAY NORMAN established the jewellery and metalcraft workshop at Sturt in 1969.  He brought a new sense of modernism to his designs with strong links to sculpture. His personal interests in using found objects and local stones resulted in a distinctly recognisable form, in particular his ‘Dribble’, ‘Repair’ and ‘Cuttlebone’ series.

For fifteen years Ray’s energy, enthusiasm and work fused Sturt with its quality, dynamism and output which continues to this day.  Ray departed for Tasmania in 1984.

RAGNAR HANSEN arrived from Norway in 1972 at the invitation of Director of Sturt, Les Blakebrough.  Ragnar’s role was to teach and maintain production.  He was an exponent of hollow ware and as such he brought this specialty to Australia for the first time.

NICHOLAS DEEPROSE trained under Ray Norman for two years during 1976-77 assisted by the Crafts Board of the Australia Council, before completing further study at the Sydney College of the Arts majoring in silversmithing and jewellery.  Nicholas works mainly through commissions from his studio and home in Bowral while maintaining his links with Sturt.

Sturt Jewellery runs term classes, short courses and invites residencies each year.
