SUMMER SCHOOL 2010
The Summer School will run from 9am Monday January 4 through to lunchtime Saturday January 9, 2010. An enrolment form in PDF is available by clicking here.
The program is listed below - some details are yet to be confirmed but enrolments will begin on 1st July. Some courses do not have a set material fee to pay up front, but students will need to pay for those materials used in the class - in this case you pay direct to the tutor. More details of these payments will be outlined on the fact sheet for each course when these are available.

Exploring basketry with Australian native plants with Meri Peach
Use native Australian plant materials to make baskets, learning to identify, select and prepare materials. Plants will be discussed in detail, with demonstrations of techniques particularly suited to each species. Hands-on instruction will give a grounding in the techniques of coiling, weaving, twining and construction. Suitable for all students. Students will pay $45 for materials direct to the tutor.
Meri Peach’s basketry refers to natural structures, the impacts of humans on the natural world and human relationships with the environment. She has been granted Residencies at various places and regularly teaches basketry workshops. She has exhibited in numerous group shows, is a founding member of Basketry NSW and editor of their quarterly newsletter.
Botanical drawing & painting – art and nature with Leonie Norton
Discover the fascinating forms and structures of your favourite plants and flowers while learning not only to draw and paint, but to observe. This course will reveal the principals of tone, highlights, composition & perspective while exploring various techniques. This course is suitable for all levels.
Leonie Norton is an international tutor and one of Australia’s most prominent botanical artists. She is past President of the Botanical Art Society of Australia and has paintings in Australian and overseas collections. Leonie exhibits annually in Australia, NZ and the UK.
Calligraphy - The Italic connection with Lexie Arlington
Explore the versatility of Italics which allows you to create contrasts and texture, adding interest to your compositions. Learn various techniques using mixed media to enhance your calligraphy endeavours. Historical and contemporary examples will be studied. All students will be encouraged to work to their individual ability level and experience in a friendly relaxed learning environment. (Students can pay $55 to the tutor for a basic calligraphy kit)
Lexie Arlington is a Sydney based freelance calligrapher. She was awarded Guild membership of the Australian Society of Calligraphers in 1998. She is a VETAB accredited teacher in Calligraphy and has a Diploma in Western Calligraphy. Lexie enjoys teaching and finds it very rewarding as it gives her the opportunity to share her knowledge, skill and love of calligraphy. Visit her website www.letterart.com.au

This course is suitable for anyone wanting to refine their photographic skills and make the most of their equipment. From taking a photograph to printing – and everything in between. You’ll go home with a fresh outlook on photography, comprehensive course notes and some stunning photos. Students will pay the tutor for ink and paper used (from $6-$15 per A3 print)
Robert Reichenfeld is a location photography specialist with over 20 years professional experience. Working initially in Europe, Robert has been part of Sydney’s busy media industry since 1995, shooting everything from beautiful homes and gardens for the glossies, to family portraits and still lifes. Robert is an experienced educator and has taught skiing and windsurfing as well as writing and photographing “how to” books.
An introduction to drawing with Kit Bullivant
Gain an appreciation of drawing as an art form and begin the journey of becoming competent and skilled in a number of mediums (pencil, charcoal, pastel, pen and paint) over a variety of subjects (from realistic perspective to informal abstract and the basics of portrait and figure drawing). This course is suitable for both the beginner and the lapsed artist.
Kit Bullivant is a practising artist and teacher of drawing, painting and communication through creativity. She studied painting, drawing, design and a sculpture for many years at the NAAS and with independent artists and sculptors, as well as Plein air Water Colour with the late Molly Flaxman at the RAS. She has taught for a number of years including the Sturt 2009 Summer School and has other private students.
Drawing and Mark Making with David Middlebrook
All students will be able to improve and enhance their drawings with the techniques and processes taught, learning a variety of skills and techniques that can transfer to all drawing media. The emphasis will be on pen and ink with some mixed media, and range in applications from instant note taking (travel drawing) to highly finished studio works.
David Middlebrook is an artist with 28 solo exhibitions to his credit. His work is held in numerous public and private collections in Australia and Japan. David travels for two months each year through remote parts of Australia drawing, researching and pursuing his interest in isolation and artist as explorer. He has also pursued these interests in Greece, Jordan, Italy and Antarctica.
Drawing and modelling the human figure with Linley Davis
Learn to develop skill and confidence in drawing and modelling the human figure. Work with various drawing mediums, observing the way the figure moves and its balance, with basic anatomy explained. Then work with colour and collage and explore the disciplines and freedoms created through cubism and fauvism. Later still work with ‘Kleen Klay’ to model a three dimensional free standing clay figure, with an internal aluminium armature structure. This course is suitable for all.
Linley Davis is a qualified and respected teacher of figure drawing with at least thirty years’ experience. Initially trained in drawing, painting and sculpture at the original National Art School, he worked as a graphic designer in the early years of television. He continues to draw, paint and model and has received numerous prizes and commissions.
Drawing people with Leeanne Crisp
Anyone can draw! People are such interesting subjects. Explore figure drawing, portraiture and composing with figures using charcoal, conte and graphite, pastel (oil and soft), gouache and watercolour, coloured pencil and inks. This workshop will enable you to use drawing in an expressive and thoughtful way. There are lots of ideas and assistance for beginners and long poses for those wanting to deepen their practice. For participants at any level.
Leeanne Crisp has created many workshops for the National Gallery of Australia and the National Portrait Gallery. Her work is in national collections and her current visual project is inspired by research on Poussin. Her portrait of Gay Bilson "Considering Persephone" was selected for this year's Archibald Prize and touring exhibition.
Felted body wrap with Catherine O’Leary
Create a piece of clothing that drapes beautifully with intricately worked surface decoration using prefelted layers of fabric. Learn how to felt wool fibre through woven fabric and explore the use of prefelts in your designs. This course is suitable for all.
Catherine O'Leary has been a feltmaker for 20 years. She has taught and exhibited her textile arts both in Australia and overseas. Her work has been included in feltmakng books and publications and her felt clothing sells successfully in Australia, NZ and Korea through her label Catherine O'Leary Designs.
Jewellery - ring making with Marcelo Zavala-Baeza
Design and construct two different two-band rings using hot and cold joints. Learn different techniques for soldering and riveting and how to select which to use for different functional or decorative effects. For those with some prior experience in silversmithing.
Marcelo Zavala-Baeza’s background is in Industrial Design and Jewellery and Object Design. He creates a wide range of objects including jewellery, hollow ware, lighting and furniture for commercial and artistic purposes. He is a co-director of Smug designs - a jewellery company making and selling both in Australia and overseas. He teaches at the Design Centre, Enmore and held a popular course at the 2008 Sturt Summer School.
Marquetry with Leo Huyghebaert
Learn to create images from wood veneers using a scalpel to cut out and place components. The course will also include discussions on understanding timber veneers, grain, texture, colour and ways of preparing veneers for use in marquetry. No experience is needed for this hands-on course and students will each complete their own project.
Leo Huyghebaert arrived in Australia in 1962 after completing a furniture apprenticeship in Belgium. He has run his own furniture business specialising in marquetry for over 30 years, with his sons now carrying on the tradition. Leo now concentrates on teaching and creating his own art works in marquetry.
Millinery with Waltraud Reiner
Make new hats, rework old hats. Learn how hats should look, feel and stay on your head. Make a classical hat from straw or felt, a race hat, a simple sunhat or try out wondrous creations till the soul dances. Everyone will be accommodated from beginners to the professional. Students pay directly to the tutor for materials used - for one hat from $90-$200 depending on size, complexity etc. Students could complete at least 2 hats.
Waltraud Reiner was born in Austria where she completed a fashion degree. She has been a milliner since 1986 and has been self employed since 1990. She has taught millinery at tertiary level in Australia, USA, Europe and Dubai. She is the founder of Melbourne’s Hat Extravaganza and Australian Hatweek which runs in September each year.
Still life acrylic painting and drawing with Jenny Manning
By learning to look at the relationship between form, texture, colour and light in a still life subject, students will explore the process of pencil and pen and ink drawing on watercolour paper, followed by acrylic painting techniques on canvas. Participants should complete at least two black and white pen and ink drawings and two acrylic paintings. This course is suitable for all.
Although Jenny Manning spent most of her working career as an art teacher at the National Gallery of Australia, she continued her art practice in her spare time. She studied sculpture in the 1980s at the Canberra School of Art and has a long time obsession with drawing and more recently painting, focusing on creating an illusion of three dimensions on a flat surface. Jenny has 24 years workshop teaching experience and particularly enjoys teaching mature age students.
Printmaking – multiple plate drypoint and collagraphs with Amanda Davies
Investigate effects of colour separation over a series of colour palettes. Explore engraving, registration and printing to produce a suite of prints using a variety of quality inks and papers. Some printmaking experience an advantage. The $35 material fee paid on enrolment covers the cost of all materials and equipment but not papers. These can be bought from the tutor for approx. $10 per sheet.
Amanda Davies has been a handmade print specialist for the last 30 years, principally working with lithography. She teaches art at tertiary level in Sydney and Newcastle. She enjoys the print studio atmosphere as so much is learnt inking and printing archival quality works.
Printmaking without Presses - In the Tradition of Margaret Preston with Marianne Courtenay
The emphasis is on techniques that enable participants to produce strong and confident works with a minimum of equipment and materials without access to specialised print-making facilities. Lino and vinyl cutting, printing and colour registration techniques are covered as well as the use of different papers for different effects, a range of hand-coloured media, print editioning conventions and presentation. Suitable for beginners and students with a little experience.
Marianne Courtenay studied design at the National Art School in Sydney but is best know as a printmaker specialising in limited edition collagraphs, woodblocks and computer-based prints. Her work is held in public, corporate and private collections in Australia and in private collections overseas. Marianne is an experienced and popular tutor and teaches on a casual basis with the Illawarra Institute of TAFE.
Weave and Colour - piece dyeing with Monique van Nieuwland
Explore the wonderful possibilities of piece dyeing. Participants will experience a variety of fibres (cotton, silk, wool, rayon, monofilament) and weave structures (supplementary warp/weft, honey comb, twills) on shared warps. The woven results will be transformed into totally different cloths using several types of dyes (synthetic/natural) Suitable for people with basic weave knowledge.
Monique Van Nieuwland has been a weaver for more than 30 years and has exhibited her work since 1985. She spent many years teaching at the ANU School of Art, Textiles Workshop and is currently a Resident Weaver at Sturt.
Woodturning with Richard Raffan
Dramatically increase your efficiency and confidence turning bowls, lidded bowls, suction-fit boxes, scoops and hollow forms. Cover all aspects of facework, centrework, endgrain hollowing, sharpening, timber selection, cutting blanks, design, selling and more. Learn by working through projects designed to develop particular techniques. For students with recent woodturning experience who know a gouge from a scraper from a skew chisel who can bring their own lathe and tools.
Richard Raffan is known world-wide for his turned bowls and boxes, as a teacher, writer and author of classic wood turning books and videos. Since 1980 he has led over 400 workshops in North America and Europe and has been a major technical and aesthetic influence on wood turners world wide. His work is in major public and private collections in Australia and overseas.
Woodworking with John Gallagher
Make a solid timber side table from beginning to end, starting with the preparation of components using a variety of machine and hand skill processes. Learn methods of joinery, fine sanding and finishing. The project is specifically designed to teach absolute beginners the fundamentals in fine furniture construction.
John Gallagher runs his own fine furniture studio practice (Piece Furniture) in Sydney and is a part-time teacher at the Sturt School for Wood. He specialises in one-off commissioned pieces for both private and commercial clients. His work is characterised by contemporary, practical design coupled with traditional high quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. John is a past graduate of the Sturt School for Wood and has exhibited widely.
Kid’s art with Sue Meredith
Kids' clay with Sue Buckle for 8-14 year olds
An exciting and stimulating course giving children the technical skills and creative confidence to develop their own ceramic artworks. Each child works to their own ability and at their own pace, designing their own projects to work on. Pieces will be kiln fired after the course for collection at a later date.
Sue Buckle is a ceramic artist and very experienced teacher. She has taught adults and children for over ten years. She currently runs ceramic courses in primary schools around Sydney as well as specialist workshops in the school holidays.
Kids' comedy and circus with Victoria Hahn for 8-14 year olds
The focus is on performance. After 3 days each child will be able to display their true comic genius. The workshop will include basic slapstick moves, (especially how to fall safely) telling funny jokes, entrances, exits, and of course, timing. As well there will be stilts, juggling, unicycle, and “fire” twirling. Please state shoe size and current skills on enrolment.
Victoria Waldron-Hahn has been involved in circus work since 1983. She has performed in and around Sydney and NSW at Community and Arts Festivals. Victoria has tutored in a wide variety of community performance projects and has run workshops for schools and youth groups for many years and has worked as a clown doctor in Sydney Children's Hospital since 2000.
Kids' art & craft -“Picasso Power” with Ellen Nolet for 6-14 year olds
Decorate objects such as wall hangings, mirrors, picture frames, boxes and tiles using a variety of paints and glues on different backgrounds. Create 3D effects and learn about decoupage, painted effects, colour, texture and design. The course is designed to stimulate the imagination while creating exciting work that the family will treasure. Each child is guided on an individual basis.
Ellen Nolet has run children’s workshops for over 10 years. She first trained in Holland and has since completed a number of art related courses. She is an active mosaic master-artist and has exhibited her works extensively.
