Sturt was established in 1941 and is Australia's oldest craft centre. Sturt is a centre of excellence for the promotion & teaching of Australian contemporary craft and design. Situated just one hour south of Sydney, ten minutes from the F2 Freeway and five minutes from Tourism Southern Highlands at Mittagong, Sturt attracts over 50,000 visitors each year and is one of the major cultural attractions of the Southern Highlands region.
Sturt presents contemporary craft courses for people of all ages and skill levels in full-time, part-time and short course formats. The full-time VETAB accredited Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology attracts up twelve students each year from all over Australia. Part-time courses in jewellery, ceramics, wood and weaving are taught to over 100 students each week. Our residential Summer and Winter Schools attract over two hundred students in January and July to take part in a wide selection of craft and fine art courses. A selection of short courses in weekend or 1 day introductory formats are offered during the year.
STURT SHOP & GALLERY is open 7 days from 10am - 5pm and presents an annual program of changing professional exhibitions in the gallery and promotes the work of over 300 Australian artists, designers and craftspeople in the shop.
STURT COFFEE is a stylish new pop-up coffee bar operating inside and outside Sturt Gallery offering barista-made coffees, teas, quality soft drinks and sweet & savoury treats from Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 4pm.
In 2000, Sturt was presented with the "Best Regional Attraction in the Southern Highlands" Award and was Runner Up in 2006. In 2011, Sturt was awarded "Southern Highlands Business of the Year". Sturt Craft Centre is an important part of the cultural history of Australia, and deserves a visit from anyone traveling to the Southern Highlands of NSW.
In 2013 Sturt was awarded the Australian Craft Award in the best craft retailer category
